Coke and Mentos

We have been busy being scientists again!
Along side our human body work we have been having a look at physical reactions.
We tested 3 different types of Coke and Mentos - we had to keep all our variables the same and only change one to make it a fair test.
We changed coke types first, but kept everything else the same.
The types we tested were Coke Zero, Budget Diet Cola and Pepsi Max.  All the research we did said that Coke Zero worked the best - but that is not what we found!
After we had tried the three types of warm cola we tested a Coke Zero that had been in the fridge - that made a big difference.

Here are some videos showing our results.

This one wasn't all that flash

This one was  the one that we had in the fridge - it didn't work at all.

And . . . the Budget Cola was the best!!

Then we did some thinking and modified the top so it only had a little hole, because the pressure built up, it was fantastic!  The coke shot higher than the top of the basketball hoop backboard!

Best Camp Ever.

On Thursday the Middle class went on camp to Dunedin. We slept at the Otago Museum in Discovery World. At the museum we went into the butterfly room. I got about 8 of them on me. The butterflies all liked my big shiny and sparkly bow.You pick them up by putting your finger underneath its front legs, and it should slowly climb onto your finger. Lots of the butterflies where lying on the ground. In the butterfly room there was a water fall. Surrounding the waterfall was a big butterfly. I think it was the only one that big. There was a big furry looking caterpillar. When it was dark and quiet, and all the alarms were on, we went out on a night walk in the museum. I heard lots of shuffling from feet. We were at the place with all the animals. It was really quiet until the girl who was looking after us told us a story. She said if you listen you can hear the sounds of these creatures. It made me worry about the noises that would be heard. The first noise that we heard was the lions waking. They sounded like real animals. Lots of people said they could see Mrs Glover, Mr Copland and Mr Dassen making the noises. After we got to have a look around at all the animals in the room. This was the best camp ever.

Camp Fun

Camp Fun  William

On Thursday the Middle class went to Dunedin. When we got to Dunedin we went inside the ice skating rink.
I got to go on the ice because of the trolley. Mrs Glover nearly pushed me into the wall then they put the disco ball on.
After ice skating we went to the to the dinosaur park and we had lunch,  after lunch we played and we got a go on the dinosaur.
Next we went in a camp groups to do the town challenge my group was Zoe and Henry and I.We had to answer the things on our list and I bought a mermaid, a tiara and ice cream rubber.

A Rippa it was really fun and addicting. I liked playing against the other kids. It was really fun ripping the tags off and getting tries, I even got my first try.
Some teams were really good at playing, I really liked it we came to the semi finals.  It was Warepa vs Warepa in the semi final my team lost to the other team but it was still really fun and addicting.
I loved it!

Scottish Settlers - by Shaun

On the 22nd of May we went to the Toitu Museum and pretended that we were Scottish settlers.
We made different families with different clothes, hats, and different and weird names. Then we went to a boat and tried to think what it was like travelling from Scotland all the way to New Zealand.
It was so hard to live in a boat people spewing, drunk, tired and wishing to be home and that they never should of came over to New Zealand.
We had to clean all the spuke off the floor which was hard.
We had to freeze and make a pose and say what we were feeling.
Our family was the Mcdonald's Ma, Da, Alice, Douglas, Keith and Dougal and we were  Scottish dancers.
We meet other people on our journey to New Zealand and they weren't happy either.
We went back upstairs and get out of the clothes but some of us did not want to.

Middle Class Camp 2015

On the 21st of May 2015 the Middle Class went to Dunedin for their Camp.
My favourite activity was Ice Skating because it was so funny watching people fall over, but trust me it really hurts.
The cool thing was they put the lights on because we were the only ones there, the lights shine all over the Ice Skating rink and make it light up. At first I was really scared because it felt really slippery, but I got used to it quite easily.
When the Class had just got onto the Ice the bright lights were on, when everyone had got the hang of it, the bright lights went off. Even though William was not allowed to ice skate he went on the trolley and I think he had a nice time.
When we had to get off I was sad to leave but I can always go there with my family again.

Ice Skating

On Thursday the Middles went on camp, we went ice skating first and everyone was nervous.
When we got in it took us a while to get our skates on, a while after we got going every one went straight for the sides. We were slowly going into the middle then there were some bad crashes and sore falls. For most of us it was our second time ice skating but it was some of our first time ice skating. We started racing, that was when there were the worst falls, Marshall fell over lots. Evie was the best ice skater not adding the adults and they were pushing the carts really fast William got pushed as well he couldn't ice skate because he has a broken finger. Mrs Bissett told us that there was five minutes to when we will have to go so we made the most of the rest of the time, we all went out for the last five minutes, so that was when we had some of the worst falls. There were lots of crashes and bangs then we had to leave. It took us a long time getting the ice skates off we put a big line up of ice skates on the counter, then we went to the Dinosaur Park where we had lunch and we played for a while.
It was super fun and energetic.

Hockey with Rory.

Today we practiced our hockey skills with Rory.  We had to be really careful to keep our heads up and sticks down.
It was hard to control the ball while dribbling.
Dribble King was lots of fun!

Trapping and passing.

We also learnt some words like have, who, stand up, wearing.
We will try to remember our signs and practice in class

TRENCH DAY

On Tuesday the 5th of May the junior class and middle class set up trenches made of sheets with camo bits over it. In the junior room they had green sheets and in the middle room’s trench they had a white trench day.
They had sheets over the tables to make a trenches and they had to stay under them, if they got out they would have got shot.
We had to eat yucky food like bully beef, Mrs Bissett’s burnt cookies, apricot jam and also cold rice with maggots and mouse poop.
I believe that it would be a pretty horrible life for the soldiers. Thanks to all the soldiers that fought for us.

Comments
1.Its fun but a pretty horrible life the soldiers lived in.
2.Very appreciative for the soldiers for them to think of us  the way they did.
3.We thought it was nice to do something like that.
4.The trenches would be awful to live in.
5.It was a great experience to see what it was like, even though ours was pretend.

Field of Remembrance

Over the past few days we have been looking in detail at the meaning if ANZAC Day and what it means to us.  One if the things we have done as a school was to create a Field of Remembrance.  We constructed the crosses with our buddies, lining up the names correctly, then today the Senior Class measured out our field and we created the field.  We all had turns erecting a cross for a soldier or civilian that had paid the ultimate sacrifice.
We recognised several names from the area.
We hope some of you can visit it during the next few weeks.  It is pretty special.

Our completed Field of Remembrance.
